Volunteers (50) are trained to facilitate the use, enjoyment and stewardship of local ravine areas along the Don River Valley in North Toronto. Volunteers will host guided walks with diverse communities, share knowledge about indigenous plants and organize plantings in the community to increase biodiversity and support the health of the river and the Greenbelt.

Pollinator friendly art / canoe planters are installed in parks and public spaces in the upper reaches of the Rouge River and Don River (Mount Joy Creek) watersheds to facilitate the use, enjoyment and stewardship of local ravine areas. Over 2,000 neighbourhood residents will participate in plantings, learn about the importance of pollinators, urban river valleys and the Greenbelt. Volunteers will maintain the pollinator gardens and encourage the creation of additional gardens in the area (i.e. with corporate partners, homeowners and other landowners).

Four Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) trails connect Markham residents with nature through sensory experiences. A first in Canada, the trails will be located in city parks adjacent to the Don and Rouge river valleys and engage the areas substantial Asian populations and other residents to use, enjoy and steward these unique spaces.
Greenbelt Fall Funding Programs Announced

Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation’s is now accepting proposals for our Prosperous Greenbelt and Resilient Greenbelt funding streams. We wish to express an interest in enhancing the role the Greenbelt’s water resource systems, including wetlands, recharge areas and river valleys, play in the continued prosperity and high quality of life offered in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Niagara-on-the-Lake – The Greenbelt Foundation has partnered with the Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance and Niagara Region to host a day-long workshop and farm tour focusing on small plot agriculture. Over 50 farmers and stakeholders are participating in the event to hear from a range of experts on the opportunities for small scale farms.
The Importance of Urban River Valleys
The Greenbelt protection has extended to 21 major urban river valleys and 7 coastal wetlands across the Greater Golden Horseshoe!
The addition of the 21 urban river valleys to the Greenbelt is an important recognition of the vital role the Greenbelt plays in protecting the hydrological features we rely on for clean drinking water, flood protection, and healthy ecosystems.
