Building on their pilot project, over the past year the Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association fully launched, promoted, and delivered a four season program of guided eco-tours that seamlessly intertwined ecological learning with hiking, snowshoeing, and bicycling adventures in the northern Bruce Peninsula, at the tip of the Greenbelt. Pilot eco-adventures were hosted in May 2017 and based on a comprehensive business plan and lessons learned from 18 beta-tested trips. A website (www.myecoadventures.ca) has been created, and social media and targeted print campaigns have been conducted to promote the project.

The Greenbelt and adjacent natural systems will be inventoried in Peel Region and the value of stormwater services assessed and integrated into the Region’s municipal asset management program and financial processes. Business cases will establish comparable economic costs and returns. The project will change Peel Region’s overall asset management strategy, encourage greater investment in the restoration of wetlands and other green infrastructure in the Credit River Valley watershed and prioritize natural asset restoration projects. Project partners include Peel Region and lower-tier municipal governments, TRCA and FCM.

The Greenbelt is home to a great variety of old-growth forests - ancient cedars on the escarpment, deep and shady hemlock valleys, oak savannahs, mature hardwood forests and others. The Project will publish a hiking guide to help Ontarians discover old-growth forests in the Greenbelt and learn about their ecological values and practical conservation information. With an initial print run of 2,500-3,000 copies, the full-colour book will include detailed mapping, illustrations, photography, practical conservation information, and opportunities for citizen/community science. Revenues from book sales will support public engagement through educational presentations. Digital citizen-science tools will encourage conservation of old-growth forests, which are currently endangered eco-systems.

The project develops and launches the Greenbelt Moccasin Identifier Program to establish Indigenous heritage markers on the Greenbelt landscape that increase the visibility of First Nations and Metis in the area and support indigenous cultural reclamation, a critical component of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions’ Calls to Action. The Chiefs of Ontario Assembly have endorsed the program and multiple government and community partners are interested in contributing and supporting the program. The project educates and strengthens engagement and stewardship of the Greenbelt. Sites will be marked where First Nations and The Metis Nation have deep, ancestral ties to the Greenbelt landscape.
