BIOSWALES (WET / DRY)
Swales are shallow vegetated open channels designed to convey, reduce and filter runoff. A wet swale includes design features that improve the contaminant removal and runoff reduction functions of a simple roadside ditch. A dry swale, also referred to as a bioswale, is an enhanced wet swale that incorporates an engineered filter media bed and optional perforated pipe underdrain or a bioretention cell.
CONSTRUCTED WETLAND
Constructed wetlands use natural processes involving vegetation, soils, and associated microbial assemblages to improve water quality. They are designed and engineered to treat wastewater and manage runoff. Constructed wetlands are tailored to respond to site and community specific needs. The uses of constructed wetlands can contribute to one or all of the following: improved water quality, stormwater management, sewage treatment, public access points, and habitat for wildlife.

Burlington – Cyclists of all ages gathered in Spencer Smith Park on the city’s waterfront for Burlington Bike Fest. Organized by the Burlington Cycling Committee, the City of Burlington, and Burlington Tourism, Bike Fest is an Ontario 150 Celebrate by Bike event – one of fifteen such community cycling events taking place throughout Ontario in summer 2017. Ontario 150 Celebrate by Bike showcases Ontario’s cycling assets including iconic routes– the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the Greenbelt Route, and Bike Friendly Communities. Burlington is home to both iconic trails and is one of 39 Bike Friendly communities in Ontario, having achieved a Silver rating from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.

The Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has recognized the Greenbelt Route, a 475km cycling route, as an Ontario Trail of Distinction. The Greenbelt Route joins the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, the Trans Canada Trail Ontario, the Bruce Trail and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Trans Ontario Provincial Trails in this important recognition.

Cornwall – In one of 15 community cycling events throughout Ontario, the City of Cornwall partnered with the Cornwall Canada 150 Committee, Transition Cornwall and Ontario By Bike to host a children’s bike rally in Lamoureux Park, the ‘Tour de Lamoureux Park’. The bike rally included games, prizes and live entertainment.

New web platform includes hundreds of customizable points of interest for active adventures in the GTA
The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation launched an upgraded, interactive platform building on the success of the GreenbeltRoute. Greenbelt Explore includes the 475km Greenbelt Route, twelve 1-day and overnight cycling loops, 21 Greenbelt Walks, and 3 Brewery Discovery Routes. The recommended itineraries can be customized to match any interests and deliver something for everyone.
Greenbelt Route Recognized as an Inaugural Trail of Distinction
We are excited to share the news that the Greenbelt Route has been recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport as one of five inaugural Ontario Trails of Distinction.
The 475 km signed cycling route explores the natural spaces and countryside of Ontario's protected Greenbelt. It connects with the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail to form a cycling beltway through the natural beauty surrounding Canada’s most densely populated region.
The new Trails of Distinction program showcases Ontario's most distinctive trails and was initiated as part of celebrations for the Province's 150th anniversary. According to the program overview, it focuses on trails that demonstrate and promote Ontario trails as a world class, diversified system that is planned and used in an environmentally responsible manner.
We share wholeheartedly in this focus, and we are thrilled to be recognized. We hope the Trails of Distinction will bring more riders into the countryside and communities of Ontario's Greenbelt!
The Greenbelt Route and Waterfront Trail join the Trans Canada Trail Ontario, the Bruce Trail, and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Trans Ontario Provincial Trails in this significant recognition. Ontario's Greenbelt also provides permanent protection for the Bruce Trail, connecting Ontarians and visitors to the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
