The agri-food industry is becoming increasingly competitive and global.  Simultaneously, changing attitudes toward the environment, health and wellness, as well as viewing food as an experience rather than simply sustenance, are motivating consumers to reconnect with the source of the food they choose to consume, in order to verify its authenticity and overall value.  A result of this trend is consumers’ increasing interest in local food.

Celebrate the Greenbelt with the Oshawa Generals

The Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities (FBSC) coordinates a “Greenbelt Night” with the Oshawa Generals, harnessing the hockey spirit in Durham Region to celebrate the 5^th anniversary of the Greenbelt. In a fun, friendly setting, the event provides an opportunity to educate the public about the benefits of the Greenbelt.

Holland Marsh Hoe-down

The event is a celebration of rural heritage in the Greenbelt with a traditional barn dance held in the Holland Marsh area on the evening of January 28, 2010, as part of the celebration of the Greenbelt’s 5^th anniversary. The Holland Marsh Growers’ Association (HMGA) will host an authentic “hoe-down” barn dance, complete with a caller, live band, decorations, and Greenbelt-grown food.

Growing the Greenbelt Marquee Event

The growing the Greenbelt event draws key politicians, environmental activists, farmers, winemakers, Greenbelt community leaders and the media to Oakville in April 2010 to celebrate the addition of new lands to the Greenbelt. The event serves as an inspiration to continue to protect, expand and enhance the Greenbelt in the years ahead.

Public Launch

The “Cootes to Escarpment Vision: Public Launch” is a celebration of the completion of the planning process. The public and stakeholder event launches the “Cootes to Escarpment Vision” plan document, with a formal ceremony followed by organized outdoor winter activities as part of celebration activities for the Greenbelt’s 5th anniversary.
