Towards a Business Case for Soil Health: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge on the Economics of Soil Health Practices in Ontario mobilizes current knowledge to help build the business case for soil health on farms in southern Ontario to aid decision making by farmers and their advisors. It is the first comprehensive presentation of the state of soil health economic information for southern Ontario.

Stories from the Greenbelt: The Benefits of Escaping into Nature
The Benefits of Escaping into Nature
February 24th, 2022
For the majority of Ontarians, the amount of time spent in nature has increased during the pandemic. Whether that means going for a walk in a nearby park or cycling along the shores of Lake Ontario, a lot of us have turned to nature for the many benefits it provides. As for me, I have explored nearby ponds to watch the painted turtles basking in the late afternoon sun and even saw my first bullfrog this past summer! I’ve spent many weekends exploring the Cambridge to Paris Rail-Trail, which lines the Grand River, to see the Canadian Geese raising their young.

Stories from the Greenbelt: More Than a Highway Sign - Ontario's Greenbelt
More Than A Highway Sign - Ontario's Greenbelt
January 26th, 2021
Many of us recognize them: friendly blue and white signs peppered along our roads and highways. If you look closely, past the car exhaust and overpasses, you will notice they are usually accompanied by deep green forests, thriving wetlands, or rushing rivers that may inspire a second glance and a lingering curiosity: what’s down that road?
I am referring to the “Entering the Greenbelt” signs, of course, that exist along several main thoroughfares in the Greater Golden Horseshoe. But although many of us have a positive feeling towards these signs, do we really understand what they mean? Do we understand what they protect?

Find out more about our recipients
Conservation Ontario is accepting the award on behalf of the 36 conservation authorities it represents. On an annual basis, Ontario conservation authorities see about 8 million visitors a year, but during 2020 that number rose to 10 million. A surge in visitor traffic this large has never been seen before. Conservation authorities had to work very quickly to put new protocols in place to adapt to this increased demand, and many of them developed new innovative programming such as reservation systems, a Forest Therapy Program, Storybook Walks, and a Talking Forest App. Click here to learn more about Conservation Ontario.

The Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network supports and connects markets, farmers, and shoppers around Ontario’s Greenbelt and aims to increase the success of farmers’ markets in the region. This network supported its members to go online in 2020, so that consumers could engage with their local farmers’ markets virtually, buy food from their favourite vendors, and have it delivered to safe locations. This resulted in $1.3 million in sales for Greenbelt farmers from May to December 2020 and supported 570 farmers and vendors. Click here to learn more about Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network.
