Toronto, October 1, 2008 – Today, chefs from Jamie Kennedy Kitchens, Vertical, Palais Royale, Chez Victor, Fun Guy Farm and George Brown Chef School celebrated the launch of the new Chefs’ Market at Evergreen Brick Works by preparing a special brunch using only locally grown and raised food sold at the Market. The new chefs-only market, created in partnership between Evergreen and the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation, simplifies sales channels for farmers/producers from Ontario’s Greenbelt and nearby areas, providing Toronto chefs easy access to locally grown food.
Open weekly on Wednesday mornings this fall (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) the Chefs’ Market establishes a new food distribution network helping build a more robust economy for farmers and chefs. In addition to providing infrastructure, on-site cold storage is being explored to support the new long-term initiative, which further positions Evergreen Brick Works as a hub for local food in Toronto.
“The Chefs’ Market is a significant piece of Evergreen’s broader food strategy to support local food and its producers,” says Seana Irvine, program director, Evergreen. “Chefs want the freshest ingredients; producers need to sell – it’s a locally grown marriage of supply and demand.”
“Chefs play an important role in our lives and in our eating of local food. This is seen in the popularity of food shows and now, with this market, providing local, Greenbelt food to chefs,” said Burkhard Mausberg, president of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. “The Greenbelt Foundation is pleased to be a part of the Chefs’ Market, helping distribution for more than 5,500 Greenbelt farmers.”
Open for chefs every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Chef’s Market closes October 29 for the winter and reopens again in late May 2009.
