Statement from Burkhard Mausberg on the resignation of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty
Today, Burkhard Mausberg, CEO of the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation released the following statement on the resignation of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty:
“The creation of the Greenbelt Act in 2005 not only saw the largest mass of environmentally sensitive land in the world protected from urban development, it also signaled the commitment of a new government towards the stewardship and sustainability of our province’s environment.
At 1.8 million acres, the Greenbelt is a tremendous resource for Ontario: it is home to some of the most valuable agricultural lands in Canada, giving us fresh, local food to enjoy year-round. It is home to some of our most precious wetlands and lakes, giving us clean water to drink. It is home to vibrant forests giving us clean air. Most of all it is home to endless possibilities – everything from farmer’s markets and hiking trails, wine-tours, cities, towns, and villages, to wildlife, swimming, and countless others.
Providing more than $9.1 billion dollars in direct and indirect economic benefits to Ontario, the benefits resulting from the creation of the Greenbelt are undeniable.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Premier McGuinty for his tireless dedication to the creation and success of the Greenbelt and for his leadership in its creation.
Each and every day, the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation furthers its commitment to ensuring that Ontario’s Greenbelt remains a beneficial, valuable and permanent feature that enhances the quality of life for all Ontarians for many generations to come.”
